Fully-geared firefighters and participating racers are ready to hit the ground running, or walking, again later this month in Jackson County to honor first responders and raise money for injured veterans. NYPD Sgt. James P. Bast, who died from 9/11-related illness was honored on April 7 by the Town of Islip with a street in Sayville named after him. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg was on hand for the ceremony. Sgt. Bast worked on Bloomberg's security detail when he retired after 23 years of service with the NYPD. Liz Carvajal was a born and bred New York City girl, who had just moved home from living in Boston. Watching the tv coverage on 9/11 all day long with her family, by evening she knew she had to help her beloved city. Having a background in social work, Liz thought she could help the loved ones who had gathered at hospitals, looking for their missing loved ones. More.

Build-a-Rig For Scott, a community-based nonprofit on Long Island, held a charity event to build a ceremonial unit rig in memory of the late retired NYPD Officer Scott Blackshaw, who died at age 52 in 2018 of esophageal and brain cancer related to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. An FDNY firefighter who died of 9/11-related cancer last year was honored Wednesday for his heroics during a Bronx blaze. Firefighter Daniel Foley was posthumously awarded the Emerald Society Medal at the South Street Seaport for saving two young kids while responding to an early afternoon fire at the Butler Houses on Webster Avenue in Claremont on Feb. 20, 2019.
