After 9/11, scholarships were created to support the children of victims as well as the responders who participated in the rescue and recovery efforts. This is a list of those that are still open to applications. For more information about 9/11 scholarships, call our office at 203-966-3911.

Criteria: The America 911 Foundation funds a college scholarship program for children of active first responders (EMS, fire, police) who place their lives on the line for their communities. The scholarship is available to any student whose parent is an active duty first responder, either paid or volunteer, and only applies to accredited colleges and universities. Applicants must obtain two letters of reference from non-related current school faculty and/or community leaders. Additionally, applicants will need to write an essay of 250-500 words on the selected prompt. The prompt and full list of guidelines can be found on the application form.

Criteria: Following the death of 176 Aon colleagues on September 11, 2001, Aon established the Aon Memorial Education Fund in 2002 to provide post-secondary educational financial assistance to the dependent children of these Aon employees. To date, Aon has helped 84 children receive support from the Fund in order for them to achieve their academic and professional aspirations.

Criteria: The Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) Institute and CFA Institute Research Foundation have established a scholarship program to assist dependent children, spouses, or domestic partners of those who died or were permanently disabled, or victims permanently disabled, as a direct result of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks. The scholarship program is intended for those who plan to pursue education in college or vocational schools and programs now or in the future. Scholarships are offered each year for part-time or full-time undergraduate study in finance economics, accounting or business ethics majors at an accredited institution of the student's choice.

Criteria: The purpose of the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund is to provide education assistance for post-secondary studies for financially dependent individuals of those who died or were permanently disabled as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and during the rescue activities relating to those attacks.

Criteria: This scholarship was created in honor of Glen D. Kirwin, a 1982 graduate of the college who lost his life in the tragic events of September 11, 2001 at his office in the World Trade Center. There are no objective requirements to qualify for the scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to one or more third or fourth-year students whose character and involvement in University life most resemble Glenn's, with preference to applicants who are children of victims of the 9/11 tragedy.

Criteria: The WTC scholarship benefits dependent children and surviving spouses of New Jersey residents who were killed or died as a result of injuries sustained by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The award also benefits the dependents of those who died as a result of the illnesses caused by exposure to the attack sites. This scholarship is only available for U.S. citizens for full-time undergraduate degrees.
Forms Needed: Those interested may apply here. Additionally, applicants must provide the following to verify eligibility:
  • Proof the deceased was a New Jersey resident on September 11, 2001
  • An original or certified copy of the death certificate, or an accurate and complete photocopy of the original or certified copy of the death certificate
  • A letter from the deceased's physician stating the cause of death
  • Proof that the deceased was registered with an appropriate state or federal registry, including, but not limited to:
    • The Victims Compensation Fund
    • The World Trade Center Medical Monitoring & Treatment Program
    • The World Trade Center Health Effects Treatment

ICMA-RC Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund

Criteria: The Vantagepoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in 2001 to honor the lives of our nation's police officers, firefighters, and other local and state government employees who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The fund provides financial assistance to the surviving spouses and children of employees who have died in the line of duty and are planning to attend an accredited two-year community college, four year accredited university, or vocational school full-time. Scholarships are provided up to $10,000 for eligible students.

Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation

Criteria: The Foundation was established by the family and friends of Michael Francis Joseph Lynch, FDNY Badge # 2315. It is a charitable foundation dedicated to providing educational opportunities to the children of firefighters, both fallen and active, as well as children of other victims of the September 11th attacks. The Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation Scholarship is eligible for children of 1). FDNY Uniform Fire & EMS 2). Victims of September 11, 2001 or 3). Victims of Other  Disasters and Fires. In addition, applicants must be full-time students in pursuit of an undergraduate college degree in 2015-2016.

Criteria: Needham & Company, LLC established the Needham September 11th Scholarship Fund shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Designed to benefit the children of the victims who lost their lives, the purpose of the fund is to ensure that each child is provided with an opportunity for a private secondary and/or college-level education. Awarding of funds is based upon the individual merits of each applicant, with the primary criteria being financial need, scholastic abilities, and community/civic involvement. Applications are considered and reviewed case by case in an objective and non-discriminatory manner. Fund allocations are limited to individuals from households with a pre-September 11th gross income of less than $125,000, with scholarships awarded to those who have either been accepted or are presently attending an accredited private high school, college, or university.

New York State WTC Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: The NYS World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship guarantees access to a college education for the families and financial dependents of victims who died or were severely and permanently disabled as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the resulting rescue and recovery efforts. Students must be children, spouses and/or financial dependents of the deceased or permanently disabled victims. This includes victims at the World Trade Center site, at the Pentagon, or on Flights 11, 77, 93, or 175. It also applies to survivors of the terrorist attacks who are severely and permanently disabled as a result of injuries sustained in the attacks or the subsequent rescue and recovery operations.  Scholarships are provided for as much as $21,892 for four years of full-time undergraduate study or five years in an approved five-year bachelor's degree program. Rutgers September 11th Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: In response to the devastating attack on our nation on September 11th, 2001, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has established the September 11th Memorial Scholarships for the dependent children of New Jersey residents who lost their lives in this catastrophe. This financial support will be available for any undergraduate college or school on the New Brunswick, Newark or Camden campuses to which the individual applies and is admitted. Applicants must comply with the standard application and admission requirements. Currently enrolled students at Rutgers or applicants should forward a letter with appropriate documentation to the Director of Funds Management, Rutgers Office of Financial Aid, 620 George St., New Brunswick, NJ 08901. Documentation should comprise copies of the following three items: the victim's death certificate, the victim's 2000 New Jersey resident Income Tax return showing that the student or applicant is a dependent, and the student's or applicant's birth certificate. Caretakers of children of victims who may want to attend Rutgers in the future should keep a file of documentation (victim's death certificate and 2000 New Jersey resident Income Tax return and child's birth certificate) for use at the time of application. Following admission to the university, individuals should identify themselves as eligible for the scholarship by forwarding a letter with copies of the documentation to the Director of Funds Management, Rutgers Office of Financial Aid, 620 George St., New Brunswick, NJ 08901.

About: Camp Erin, funded by the Moyer Foundation, is the largest nationwide network of free bereavement camps for children and teens ages 6-17 that have experienced the death of someone close to them. The weekend-long experience, run by a team of grief professionals and trained volunteers, provides campers with fun activities as well as emotional support.
