The number of years since is just a number. You are still missed and still represent the collective group of all of my "friend." No one has earned that title since. You made a difference while you were here and your legacy and memory continue. 22-Black my friend.

Biography:

Craig A. Silverstein was such a devoted Rangers fan that the thought of playing hockey and rubbing shoulders with the greats of the sport took him north to Montreal.

"He spent five days there last year for his 40th birthday with at least four to six ex-Rangers," said Silverstein's brother Mark. "Brad Park, Pete Stemkowski, Rod Gilbert. . . . It was a hockey dream week and a trip on which I got a chance to chaperone."

Mark Silverstein said that as much as his brother loved the ice and his job as a managing director and equity trader with Sandler O'Neill and Partners, family came first, including events with his wife of 15 years, Maria, and children, Gabriella, 5, and Cameron, 4.

Craig Silverstein, 41, was in his office on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center's Tower Two at the time of the terrorist attack. He is among the missing.

The Silverstein family fears that Craig didn't have enough time to leave the building before the plane struck the floors below.

His wife, Maria Silverstein, Mark Silverstein's wife Gwenn in Florida, and a friend living on Long Island were the last to speak with him by phone. It was Craig's friend who urged him to leave the building.

"Craig was calm," said Mark Silverstein, 42. "He didn't sound like his life was in jeopardy. He asked for prayers for the people jumping out of the window in the first building. He wasn't panicked but he was distraught over what he was seeing."

Mark Silverstein said his brother had surgery on his Achilles tendon three weeks earlier and was on crutches. With only about five minutes between his conversations with family and friends and the time the plane hit the second tower, Craig Silverstein might not have had enough time to get out.

"He didn't know it was a terrorist attack," Mark Silverstein said. "He knew it was a plane before the media reported it. But the discussions with him were that he was OK. I think he didn't get out soon enough."

Raised in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, Silverstein was a Brooklyn College alumnus and graduated magna cum laude from Baruch College with a master's degree in business administration. He married Maria, his high school sweetheart, in December 1985. The couple lived in Battery Park City and moved to Wyckoff six years ago.

"Craig would do whatever the company asked of him," Mark Silverstein said. "But when it came to family, he never missed the important things, like things with Maria or even a first day of school. Work did not take precedence on those days."
