Our goal is to create a memorial courtyard with gardens and several new trees to provide an opportunity for family and friends to memorialize alumni, students, faculty and staff. The evolving garden currently includes a special memorial to commemorate the 15 Binghamton University alumni who lost their lives in the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001. The site was selected primarily as a contemplative space, away from the high activity areas of the campus. Its location in an enclosed courtyard also makes it readily accessible to all while providing a level of security. Events planned for site. Such events must adhere to strict guidelines that assure that the memories of those honored in the Courtyard are respected. An example was a remembrance event on September 11, 2003. Do you believe your memorial is a sacred place? Images of the 15 alumni victims adorn the memorial, invoking a sacred quality to the space. Similarly, we are in the process of installing memorial bluestone boulders with the names of other members of the University Community who are deceased and whose family and friends have requested such recognition.
