Over the weekend we were notified of the very disturbing news that there was a break-in and fire in the Chapel at Memorial Park, the temporary resting place of the unidentified remains of thousands of World Trade Center victims.  According to authorities, a 26 year-old law school graduate turned himself into police on Saturday evening.

It is with great sadness that I am writing to inform you about the sudden death of Clifton Maloney, husband of our good friend, Congresswoman Carolyn Malone. As many of you know, Carolyn Maloney has been a strong advocate demonstrating unwavering support to address the numerous issues affecting the 9/11 community over the past 8 years.

It is such a busy time for all of us with summer winding down, children going back to school and late summer vacations ending. This newsletter will hopefully make it easier to understand the events that VOICES is offering to commemorate the 8th anniversary, as well as a calendar of events that other organizations are sponsoring.

As the 8th anniversary approaches we are making plans for our annual September 10th Day of Remembrance in New York City and at our new office in New Brunswick New Jersey. The Day of Remembrance will include a 9/11 Living Memorial Workshop, an update on the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and a series of breakout sessions and panel discussions. In an effort to understand the needs of our membership, we ask you to take a few moments to participate in a brief survey.

Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Paterson recently announced the plans for the September 11th Anniversary Ceremony in New York City.   This year's service will reflect the new designation of September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.  Family members will join volunteers from the five boroughs to read the names of those lost.  Although family members can no longer descend to bedrock, the Port Authority is providing access to  the newly constructed upper level section of the memorial site.
