Best Practices

Through its Center of Excellence for Community Resilience, VOICES will share best practices and learning from other communities who have been faced with responding to acts of mass violence. Beginning with the Families from Oklahoma City sharing their experience with those who lost loved ones in the 9/11 attacks, this shared learning has provided information and comfort to many.

One example of this has been the relationship between the faculty, administrators and students from two universities which experienced attacks of mass violence: Northern Illinois University and Virginia Tech University. Several faculty members and staff from NIU authored "Enough Is Enough: a student affairs perspective on preparedness and response to a campus shooting."This book primarily discussed the shootings at both Virginia Tech and NIU. Topics addressed concerns such as academic affairs in the aftermath of campus violence, volunteers during crises, the emotional and mental health needs and the long-term healing of universities.

VOICES staff interviewed faculty, administrators, government officials, and responders from the Oklahoma City bombing and the shootings at Virginia Tech, NIU, and Tucson, Arizona to identify the best practices that would be most useful to other communities. This information is included in the eBook which was released in 2014 and is now available to download here.
