This week we received many calls in response to our announcement that we will be hosting our annual commemorative events. The September 10th Day of Remembrance and September 11th Commemorative luncheon will be held once again at the Marriott New York Downtown. The two day event is in partnership with the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

I am happy to announce the good news that, thanks to our friends at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, we now have funding to host both our September 10th Forum and September 11th Commemorative Luncheon at the Marriott New York Downtown. VOICES is issuing this e-alert to provide you with information about our annual events as well as details about New York City’s commemoration ceremony at Zuccotti Park.

I have very good news that we will be hosting our annual Information Forum again this year on Wednesday, September 10th at the Marriott Financial Center Hotel in New York City. We are in the process of planning the agenda, but at this writing the event will include an update from the National September 11 Memorial Museum, a 9/11 Living Memorial workshop and 9/11 exhibits.

As we enter the final week in July, I am sure many of you are discussing with your families how and where to observe the upcoming seventh anniversary. You may have heard the wonderful announcement by the Port Authority that families will be able to descend to bedrock at the World Trade Center site on September 11th.

This week I’d like to draw your attention to a serious topic outlined in an editorial in the New York Times, as well as an Op-Ed: the transition that will take place in 2009 from President Bush to his successor. The editorial points out that with two wars under way, this transition will be “riskier than any in recent memory” and calls on candidates to think about how they will handle the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and an orderly withdrawal from Iraq.

Last week the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released a report assessing the status of the construction at the World Trade Center site. The report indicated delays in rebuilding that would directly impact the opening of the Memorial Museum.

I would like to invite 9/11 families, rescue workers and survivors to our annual Forum on September 10, 2008. This year's event, in partnership with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center, will be a Day of Remembrance that includes panel discussions, workshops, and 9/11 exhibits. The event will include an update on the design plans for the Memorial & Museum.

This week part of our team traveled to Tampa, Florida to host VOICES 9/11 Living Memorial workshops. During our visit we met with 9/11 family members along with firefighters and rescue workers who, following 9/11, traveled from Florida to New York to help the New York City firefighters.

Like most Americans, I was saddened by the untimely death of Tim Russert. As I listened to his memorial service yesterday, I was inspired by the consistent theme of his friend’s reflections about Tim’s life – his commitment to his family, friends, faith and our country.
