“We Remember” At the News 4 NY and NY Giants Health and Fitness Expo

By Lauren Picciallo and Shannon Breslin

At all the health fairs we attend, we hand out magnets in addition to our pamphlets about the World Trade Center Health Program and other VOICES programs. The magnets are patriotically colored, ribbon shaped, the Twin Towers in the background, and diagonally in the center it states, “We Remember.”

Visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum Trip With Responders and Survivors

The hustle of the city is almost silenced by the pools that cascade deep into the ground at the 9/11 Memorial site.  The solemn hum of the pools, the trees draping - creating shadows over the onlookers, the Freedom Tower, and the 9/11 Memorial Museum - shapes the somber atmosphere created as one reflects on the enormity of September 11th, 2001.   At the Memorial Museum, people reflected on the day when nearly 3,000 people lost their lives.

Save a Firefighter

Jimmy Martinez is 24-year veteran of the FDNY. Martinez was a 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy first responder. As a direct result of his prolonged exposure at Ground Zero, Martinez developed multiple myeloma nearly a year ago. Firefighters risk their lives every day to save others. Now, we are giving you an opportunity to save the life of a hero. Sign up for the bone marrow donor registry at our Annual Information Forum on September 10th at the Downtown Marriott Hotel.

My Experience at the Health Fairs

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling,
but in rising every time we fall.”

- Nelson Mandela

If Voices of September 11th has taught me a lesson during my internship, it is epitomized by this quote.

National PTSD Awareness Day

As you may know, June 27 is designated as National PTSD Awareness Day, to inform the general public about post-traumatic stress disorder. Recognizing that many of our members are interested in learning more about PTSD, we are taking this opportunity to share information about the symptoms, but also the good news that treatment is available!

Learning About PTSD

Ridgely Ochs’ story in Newsday, “9/11 first responders’ battle with PTSD,” may have been written in 2011, but touches on issues that remain very relevant today. Today, June 27th, is National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day. While PTSD is often associated with military veterans returning from war, anyone who has lived through a traumatic event can experience symptoms at any time.

On this Awareness Day, VOICES would like to share with you this important information about PTSD, published by the National Institute of Mental Health

Visit the VOICES booth at the health fair in Perth Amboy

Do you have questions about eligibility for the World Trade Center Health Program?  Visit with us in Perth Amboy, New Jersey on Sunday, June 22nd  at the Dominican American Communitarian Association Health Fair. At the fair, we will meet with responders, survivors and their friends to provide information about the application process for The World Trade Center Health Program.

Helping Those Who Are Truly Disabled

The news recently reported that over 100 New York City first responders are expected to be arrested for millions of dollars in disability fraud for faking illnesses related to the 2001 terrorist attacks is disheartening to say the least. First responders are at increased risk for kidney damage and cancers as a result of their exposure to toxins during the recovery effort.

George Martin Returns To The Giants

George Martin returned to Giant Stadium for the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 6th. This time he wasn’t suiting up for the Giants; he was expressing his support for the 9/11 Responders. In 2008, Martin walked more than 3,200 miles across the United States to benefit “thousands of the true heroes of 9/11,” seriously ill rescue and recovery workers.
