Director of Communications and Donor Relations
Voices of September 11th (VOICES) is a 501c3 which supports those impacted by traumatic events, commemorates the lives lost, promotes national preparedness and assists communities in preparing for and responding to events. Acts of mass violence, terrorism and natural disasters occur regularly, impacting thousands of individuals each year. Communities are sometimes unprepared to respond and often do not have the resources to meet the ongoing needs of those impacted. To address this, VOICES provides long-term victims' services and assists communities by sharing our expertise and lessons learned. In 2014, VOICES launched its Center of Excellence for Community Resilience to assist communities impacted by other tragedies. Center initiatives include curriculum development and training, conferences, research and dissemination of information on mental health and public policy.
Key Responsibilities   |   Director of Communications and Donor Relations:
  • Manage annual support campaign.
  • Prepare data list, segmenting donors.
  • Write campaign collateral and select artwork.
  • Write acknowledgment letters and perform gift processing.
  • Monitor campaign progress and develop strategies for lapsed donors.
  • Research grant opportunities and prepare proposals and assists with reporting
  • Solicit event sponsorships and auction items.
  • Develop formal communications plan and calendar to promote organizational visibility, programs, and philanthropic support.
  • Responsible for media relations, newsletters, brochures, e-communications, web content and paid advertising.
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations and assist with remarks for Executive Director's speaking engagements.
  • Develop print and digital creative to promote programs and engage supporters.
  • Collaborate with internal staff to present three annual professional mental health symposiums in New York (9/9 & 9/10) and New Jersey (spring).
  • Collaborate with board and volunteers to present at least two major fundraising events annually: New York City gala and annual golf outing.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Marketing or equivalent. Master's degree desirable.
  • 3+ years of fundraising experience with an emphasis on annual campaigns and individual giving.
  • Superior writing skills; samples required.
  • Strong oral communications skills, emotional maturity and the ability to treat confidential material with sensitivity.
  • Proficient in M.S. Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Basic experience with graphic design using In-Design or Publisher desirable.
  • Experience using relational databases.
  • Experience with email marketing (Constant Contact or equivalent).
  • Special events experience desirable.

About Voices of September 11th (VOICES)
VOICES helps families and communities heal after tragedy. Founded in 2001, the organization provides a wide range of support services to promote resiliency in all those impacted by 9/11, commemorates the nearly 3,000 lives lost and advocates for national preparedness. More recently, the organization launched VOICES Center of Excellence for Community Resilience, to assist communities in preparing for and responding to acts of terrorism, mass violence and natural disasters. The Center promotes best practices in addressing the long-term needs of victims' families, survivors and responders through educational forums, training programs, and scholarly research.
